We're a Part of Your Community

Strong communities are defined by engagement from their members, from government institutions and businesses to local nonprofits and energized citizens. Responsible Care® companies are a vital part of the fabric of the cities and towns where they operate.

Community residents often have questions about local chemical facilities. Through Responsible Care, facility managers engage regularly with community members and local officials. Many companies convene Community Advisory Panels, a forum in which community members and local officials meet on a regular basis with facility representatives to ask questions and raise concerns.

Companies also participate actively in their communities by hosting plant tours, visiting local schools, supporting community centers and engaging with local media to share information about their products, manufacturing processes and safety procedures.

Social Engagement and Volunteer Efforts:

ACC member and Responsible Care Partner companies lead social engagement and volunteer efforts in their communities. For example:

  • BASF Corporation provides funding for award-winning science education programs, to stimulate science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning. Since 2010, nearly 385,000 students in grades K-12 have participated in BASF science education programs across North America.
  • At its plant in Galveston, Texas, Ethyl Corporation sponsors the Galveston Bay Foundation “Bay Day” celebration, which promotes awareness of environmental issues and solutions to improve the water quality of the bay and surrounding waterways.
  • FMC Corporation partners with more than 100 local organizations on community initiatives, as well as at least one community partnership each year in every facility location. For example, FMC served as principle organizer of a 5K charity run that raised funds for the Helen Keller School in Guadalajara, Mexico, to support blind children.
