Protecting the Environment

Protecting the Environment

Clean air, rivers, lakes and oceans, access to fresh drinking water, and healthy land for wildlife and farms – all of these are fundamental to our planet’s overall well-being.

ACC members are committed to conserving and protecting our natural resources, using materials efficiently and wisely, and reducing waste, and they track their performance and progress through Responsible Care®.

Conserving and Protecting Natural Resources

Water is essential for all life on our planet. ACC members are committed to conserving this valuable natural resource:

Protecting air quality is critical to public and environmental health. ACC members commit to efficient processes that reduce emissions to help keep our air, land and water clean:

  • Since 1988, ACC members have made significant progress in reducing hazardous emissions to the air by 79 percent, as well as reducing pollutants to the environment overall by 75 percent.
  • ACC members track core air quality indicators by measuring facility emissions of sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Between 2008 and 2016, ACC members reduced SOx emissions by 55 percent and NOx emissions by 25 percent.

Using Material Efficiently and Wisely

The products of chemistry are at the heart of solutions that help save energy and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, like high-performance insulations and windows, solar panels and wind turbines, as well as lightweight packaging and auto parts.

Chemical manufacturing processes can require a lot of energy. That’s why optimizing our energy efficiency and minimizing GHG emissions in our manufacturing facilities is a key part of our commitment to sustainability:

  • ACC members have improved their energy efficiency by more than 19 percent since 1992, even while increasing production capacity.
  • ACC members have reduced their GHG emissions and intensity by more than 24 percent since 1992.
  • A groundbreaking study by McKinsey & Company found that globally, the products of chemistry save society twice the GHG emissions than are emitted when making the products. These products can help save up to 10.9 quadrillion BTUs of energy annually, enough to power, heat and cool up to 56 million households, or run up to 135 million vehicles, each year.

Reducing Waste and Increasing Reuse and Recycling

Reducing waste in our facilities – by generating less waste in the first place, and reusing, recycling and recovering materials wherever possible – benefits the environment while also enabling more streamlined, efficient operations.

ACC member companies undertake a variety of initiatives, at the plant level and company-wide, to reduce waste and increase reuse and recycling. Each year, ACC recognizes companies that have made substantial achievements in these areas with its Responsible Care Waste Minimization, Reuse and Recycling Award.
