America’s chemistry industry uses energy to make innovative products and services that make people’s lives better, healthier and safer.  Managing energy efficiency in our companies and manufacturing facilities is a key part of our commitment to sustainability. Through Responsible Care®, ACC member companies report on their progress toward the following energy-related performance measures:

Energy Efficiency
Greenhouse Gas Intensity

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is measured in terms of BTUs consumed per pound of production. Since 1974, the U.S. chemical industry as a whole has improved its energy efficiency by almost 46 percent.

The energy efficiency of Responsible Care companies has improved by 19 percent since 1992 (based on a representative sample of ACC Membership)

Greenhouse Gas Intensity

Responsible Care companies are committed to effectively managing and reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. GHG intensity is calculated by determining the pounds of Carbon Dioxide (CO2)-equivalent emissions per pound of production. Since 1992, ACC members have reduced their GHG intensity by more than 24 percent (based on a representative sample of ACC Membership).

Chemistry Enables a More Sustainable Future

Chemistry is at the heart of many of the efficient and renewable solutions that help society save energy and reduce GHG emissions.  High-performance insulations and windows, solar panels, wind turbines, as well as lightweight packaging, auto parts and more efficient fuels that reduce energy needs in shipping and transportation all start with chemistry.

A groundbreaking study by McKinsey & Company demonstrates that on a global basis, the products of chemistry save society twice the greenhouse gas emissions than are emitted making the products. An ACC analysis of this study found that the products of chemistry help save up to 10.9 quadrillion BTUs of energy annually, enough to power, heat and cool up to 56 million households, or run up to 135 million vehicles each year.

Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Awards

The Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Awards program highlights the steps ACC member companies have taken to improve energy efficiency. ACC members are required to consider operational energy efficiency as well as waste minimization, reuse and recycling when developing their environmental, health, safety and security plans. In 2018, ACC recognized its member and Partner companies for implementing energy efficiency improvements in 2017.
